What I've Learned In My Residency

What I've Learned In My Residency

Natasha Bhalla | ACOMS22 Oral Abstract Winner

Currently, 53.6% of dental students are female and if one takes a look around, there are fewer female residents in OMFS training programs as compared to male residents. Research indicates that a diverse workforce leads to a better understanding of the patient population, creative thinking, and more perspectives during decision-making. Through my experience in residency, I have observed this time and again.

The new academic year is upon us. It is a time of excitement, anxiety, and fear (you note I do not say who is experiencing these emotions. I would argue it’s not just the first years!). There is a huge learning curve. Residents who thought as dentists yesterday must now think as ‘doctors’.

I recently had the honor of being the OMS graduation speaker for the University of Michigan class of 2022. My specific charge was to discuss strategies for career development, building a practice and effective leadership. This was a talk I had not put together before and it made me think ‘what is effective leadership?’ and ‘how do we go about building our practices?’

For me and many of you, being an OMS is an honor and privilege. To that end, my opening slide had these 5 questions:

  1. Why did you choose to do OMS?

  2. What would you do if you were not doing OMS?

  3. What do you aspire to be?

  4. What do you need to reach this aspiration?

  5. Where will you be 30 years for now?

You will all have your own answers to these questions, and what drives you. I picked 30 years because I realize I was an OMS intern in 1992. I knew I would be a surgeon from a young age, but certainly not that this would result in a transatlantic move, nor did I really understand the breath and beauty of what we do, and how much of a difference we can make.

Resident's Corner

Resident's Corner

Natalie Dunlop | ACOMS22 Poster Abstract Winner

I am a 5th year resident at UNC in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Some things I love about my residency program are the camaraderie between residents, the excellent exposure to orthognathic surgery and pathology, and the support for research we have from our faculty. The abstract I presented at the 2022 ACOMS Annual Conference was about a project working on utilizing virtual reality to train OMFS residents in performing BSSO cuts.

How to Read a Scientific Paper

How to Read a Scientific Paper

Andrea B. Burke, DMD, MD

Learning to stay abreast of current literature in one’s specialty is part of clinical training. Proficiency in reading and interpreting scholarly work is not an innate skill. I believe, however, it is a skill that can be taught and practiced.

This issue of ACOMS Review focuses on the rising stars in OMS, RESIDENTS. Residents are our future and ACOMS is developing a member benefit: a platform to assist those members who are currently seeking to join or buy a practice and conversely those members seeking talent for their practice! We hope to launch this in time for the in-person Residents Meeting this fall.

Many of us joined ACOMS as residents, and like our resident members we find that ACOMS is a valuable source for knowledge and resources to remain current and expand our practices. Both on-line and in person, the ACOMS library of clinically based courses is vast. The Anytime Anywhere program holds over 100 lectures in our on-line collection of current, cutting-edge lectures presented by accomplished colleagues.
